When I selected Yana Popova as the illustrator for Scavenger Scout: Rock Hound, I chose her after reviewing 250+ illustrators’ portfolios. It was a lot of fun looking at all of the different styles, but when I saw Yana’s work, I knew she was the right one to bring Scout to life.
Here is an early character sketch for Scout. The only physical description I gave to Yana is that she should be about 7 years old, with a purple streak in her hair and mis-matched socks. That’s it. She came up with the rest and I LOVE it.
